I collected this tree in November last year and tried to get it identified then without much success. Now that it has developed new growth it may be possible. I want to know simply if I should bin it or not so any help would be appreciated.

After a slow start it is growing really well and there is significant back budding from the trunk . It is definitely a large leafed deciduous garden variety as it was staked.

not absolutely sure Mike , but it looks like the native alder , Alnus glutinosa , Common alder not brilliant for bonsai but okay , defintely worth keeping and developing

Maybe a dogwood, cornus. Hard to tell as many shrubs look similar.
